I know there's an ongoing difference of opinion on Modern vs Mike's, but IMHO Modern wins on the canolli front. Just much more refined and not overly done. Straight up, Modern wins in my book.

The cheesecake and a few of the assorted pastries were either mass produced somewhere else or their standards have really dropped. Would not wait in line again here.

Love the lobster tails here! It serves 2-3 people (or me for 3 days if I put it in the fridge). For those unfamiliar- this lobster tail is a flaky pastry with a filling. If you want cannolis then head across the street to Mike’s pastry’s for a variety of flavors. The Modern line moves slowly when out the door so in the summer you might get a sunburn. If you arrive in the North End (Italian area) of Boston too late and they’re closed- head to Bova’s because it’s open 24/7.

Absolutely amazing bakery and pastry’s! We’re from out of town and its authenticity! You absolutely have to come here if you want some amazing goodies! Everyone was friendly, foods amazing, must Boston have!

The cannoli is large and a little too sweet for me. Their almond Florentine cookies are awesome! They have are cinnamon forward which is different. The cream filled lobster tail is nice and flaky. Overall decent pastries. Maybe a tad overpriced compared to other bakeries. I’m giving 3 stars because this place doesn’t take cash. I went in today and had some things picked out and then realized I didn’t have any cash on me! So I went to Bova bakery instead which was a good choice.

Good vibe. Delicious goodies. Price is reasonable. Note that the line (which is usually long during weekends) is for takeout. You can bypass the queue by sitting at the table and eat your dessert...[a waitress will come to take your order]Recently we tried their no-flour pastry which is a ricotta cheese based cream. It is soft. Pretty good.

My husband bought me my dream Birthday cake this past weekend and it truly was a dream! My pistachio mousse cake was heavenly perfection! Thank you so much and he said "the customer service was amazing!" We are longtime fans of Modern but this was the first birthday cake. We'll be back to your amazingly happy bakery! â¤âœŒ

The fresh-filled cannoli shells make Modern the superior pastry shop on Hanover. I liked the old location better, though - the sit-down table service at the new place is a bit much.

This place is delicious! Everyone raves about Mike's Pastry just up the street which is always crowded but not really for a reason. Modern is better food in my opinion and way easier to get in and out of. Do yourself a favor and skip Mike's and give this place a try. You won't be disappointed.

Went here on a Saturday afternoon, we had to stand in queue for 15 minutes, while having the sight of their best pastries. Ordered strawberry shortcake slice a whole new experience of it. Real strawberries and delicious cake on top of a puff pastry is best of our day. Another pastry, French roll (cream roll) is above average. Both of these are not overly sweet and rich taste. Can see and feel the quality, definitely worth visiting when you are in north end.

I love this place and every time I am in the north end it is a must stop! The variety of tasty desserts as well as the volume that you can get is awesome. I always get the cookies, or cannoli's as they are so fresh and so good, love that filling. The only downfall is make sure you bring cash as they accept no other payment. The line is long at times but it is worth the wait! Enjoy the best the north end has to offer! Highly recommended!

Don’t be fooled by the line..it moves FAST! They have this down to a science! The pastries are so beautiful and yummy 😋 OH and super well priced! Much of what you order is made to order - like the cannolis .. filled to your liking!! Love it..hope you do too! 🤗

If you are walking the Freedom Trail and don’t stop here, you missed out. They sell wonderful, homemade cookies and pastries. Expect a 10-15 minute wait in the weekends but the line moves quickly. They know what they are doing.

I've never been to Italy. But I'd question if the cannolis there could ever be as good as Modern. Pick your shell, filling, and toppings and be prepared to be in awe!

OMG! Best Italian pastries I've had in a long time. I had a mini cannoli with traditional filling and pistachios. It was crunchy on the outside, with a sweet creamy filling and a lot of pistachios. Cake boss, Buddy of Carlos' bakery, has competition!

The store is not very big inside with a couple of small tables and chairs. We got our desert to go, couple cannoli, key lime tarts and Fruit Tarts. Everything was fresh and delicious. There’s much more for us to try there.

Customer service needs improve. I walked in the door and nobody greeted or came to assist me. The lady gave me an annoying looking for some reasons and didn’t not happy to serve me. There should be a description on the website saying this place only take cash so everyone could be prepared to come here. I left to the Bova Bakery which had a nicer customer service and they made me satisfied ~

It's good pastry but customer service is bad so I wont be back, the girl behind the counter was passive aggressive rude. I don't find it acceptable so I definitely will not be returning. I'll go else where thank you!

Friendly!!!! 😊😊😊 I ordered two cakes last minute because of the epidemic going. But it was my twins Birthday on St.Patricks Day -March 17th - they were beyond friendly - fast and The Cake was Delicious - that it had my whole family in Love with the Velvet and Chocolate Cake â¤ï¸ðŸ¤¤ðŸ˜‹!! I definitely referred my family & friends â¤ï¸. Thank you Moderna Pastry!
